HUMBLE, TX (March 1, 2016) – The Shell Houston Open field gained even more star power with commitments from No. 23 Shane Lowry of Ireland and No. 32 Charles Schwartzel of South Africa, plus more major championship winners, announced Tournament Director Steve Timms.
Lowry, winner of the 2015 World Golf Championships Bridgestone event, already has two Top 10 finishes on the PGA TOUR in 2016. Schwartzel, winner of the 2011 Masters, is set to make his seventh Shell Houston Open start.
Multiple major winners Padraig Harrington of Ireland and Angel Cabrera of Argentina are on the list to tee it up the week of March 28-April 3. Harrington and Cabrera are both making their 10th SHO start.
Harrington, with two British Opens and a PGA Championship among his 23 worldwide victories, and Cabrera, with a U.S. Open and a Masters among his 44 worldwide triumphs, will be joined by American major winners Stewart Cink (British Open) and Lucas Glover (U.S. Open).
To date eight major championship winners have now committed to Houston’s tour stop. Former PGA Championship winner Keegan Bradley previously committed. The media has also reported that multiple major championship winners Phil Mickelson (two Masters, British Open, PGA Championship) and World No. 1 Jordan Spieth (Masters, U.S. Open) have the SHO on their respective schedules.
Bolstering the international field at the 25th anniversary of Shell Oil Company’s title sponsorship is a trio of Australian past Shell Houston Open winners Matt Jones (2014), Robert Allenby (2000) and Stuart Appleby (1999, 2006). Appleby is making a return after back surgery last year that broke his string of consecutive starts at 13. D. A. Points (2013) is the other past champion on the commitment list.
The Shell Houston Open is once again slotted the week before the Masters. Players have until March 25 (Friday before tournament week) to commit. They may also withdraw on or before that date with no penalty. Tickets and future player information will be available at www.shellhoustonopen.com.
