Trio honored by Houston Golf Association

HOUSTON, TX (December 15, 2015) — Houston Golf Association honored three members for outstanding contributions in 2015 at its year-end holiday gathering.

John Semander (pictured above with Board Chair Tom Forestier (L) and President Steve Timms (R) received the Earl Elliott HGA Member of the Year Award, Bob Awe received the Terry Russ Shell Houston Open Service Award and Bill Tanner received the HGA New Member of the Year Award.

The HGA Member of the Year Award honors the overall dedication to all facets of the organization’s activities displayed by Elliott, who was named the PGA TOUR national volunteer of the Year in 2001. Elliott was a past president of the organization. (Past Elliott Award Winners List)

The Shell Houston Open Service Award honors the special kind of effort displayed by Russ for more than 40 years during tournament week. Russ was a past president of the organization and was named the PGA TOUR national volunteer of the Year in 2013. (Past Russ Award Winners List)

The New Member of the Year Award recognizes outstanding effort for newcomers to the organization.

John Semander – Earl Elliott Award

  • Joined the HGA in 1991
  • Served as a Vice President of the SHO
  • Member of the HGA Board
  • Member of the HGA Junior Golf Committee
  • Has chaired a number of SHO Committees
  • Volunteers countless hours in the office
  • Volunteers for City Amateur and Sr. City Amateur
  • Member of the Texas Golf Association Boar and longtime USGA Committeeman
  • Has generated over 1.5 million in Shell Houston Open sponsorship sales

Bob Awe – Terry Russ Award

  • Joined the HGA in 2004
  • Chaired the Executive Suites for the last 3 years
  • Chaired the Bayou Terrace
  • Works every year on the Pro-Am Committee
  • Volunteers for HGA Junior Golf
  • Attended USGA Rules School for 2 years

Bill Tanner – New Member of the Year

  • Worked on a variety of committees to gain experience
  • Secured donation for The First Tee of Greater Houston
