PGA TOUR
- With his win last week at the Nissan Open, Mike Weir became the
second-winningest lefty in TOUR history. His seventh career win leaves him trailing only Phil Mickelson, who has 22.
- From ShotLink. Mike Weir hit his average approach shot 16 feet, 4
inches from the hole last week. Bernhard Langer led the field, hitting his to within 15 feet, 4 inches. Weir won and Langer finished T51. Why? Weir needed only 99 putts, including 64 of 79 (81%) from 15 feet or less while Langer had 111, making 68 of 95 (71%) from the same distance.
- John Daly enters this week's Chrysler Classic of Tucson with
back-to-back Top-10 finishes to his credit. He's never had three in a row in his career.
- Mike Weir's victory last week in Los Angeles continued the 2004 trend
of veteran winners. There has not been a first-time winner on the TOUR this year, and no one with a victory is less than 33 years old.
- This week's WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship will offer the first
$7 million purse in the history of the PGA TOUR. The winner will take home $1.2 million. That would have been enough to lead the TOUR in earnings as late as 1991 when Corey Pavin collected $925,941 for the season.
CHAMPIONS TOUR
- Mark McNulty became the 11th player in Champions Tour history to win
in his debut when he claimed the title at last week's Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am.
- Including the two stages of National Qualifying Tournament play and
his first official event last week, Mark McNulty has played 11 Champions Tour rounds. He's either been first or second at the end of each day in 10 of those rounds.
- Fuzzy Zoeller came up just one birdie shy last week of tying the
Champions Tour record for consecutive birdies. He had seven in one stretch on Sunday. He owns a share of the PGA TOUR record with eight consecutive birdies at the 1976 Quad Cities Open.
- Gary Player shot his age for the fourth time last week when the
68-year old fired a final-round 66 in Tampa.
NATIONWIDE TOUR
- Alums of the Nationwide Tour continue to shine on the PGA TOUR. Five
of the Top-10 money winners this year are former players -- Stuart Appleby (#3), John Daly (#6), Ernie Els (#7), Jeff Maggert (#9) and Harrison Frazar (#10).
- Bob Charles, the first lefthander to win on the PGA TOUR, was the
design consultant on the Clearwater Resort course in New Zealand. This week, the course will take on the best of the Nationwide and Australasian Tours at the New Zealand PGA Championship.
- Last week's stop in Adelaide, Australia, was a long journey for the
players on the Nationwide Tour, but a homecoming for many. No less than 13 Nationwide Tour members hail from Australia.
