Friends of Junior Golf

The Houston Golf Association has been widely known for administering a moderately priced junior golf program for youngsters since 1957. That nationally recognized program now services more than 1,500 youngsters between the ages of 12-18. It provides a tournament schedule on top courses from June through mid-August, plus other special events throughout the year. However, HGA's junior program does much more for the community.

The Friends of Junior Golf is an offshoot of the junior golf program and it has been funding academic scholarships since 1996. To date more than $320,000 in grants has been awarded. Youngsters from throughout the region currently receive annual scholarships of $5,000 from the Friends of Junior Golf Program.

These scholarships are awarded to youngsters based on academics and need. Playing ability does not figure into the selection process. Currently eight (8) students are on HGA Friends of Junior Golf Scholarships. They must maintain their academic standing to receive $2,500 per semester, or a total of $5,000 per year. Current scholarship recipients are:

  • 2002 -- Lauren Barbir of Montgomery, TX (University of Notre Dame)

  • 2002 -- Timothey Lenz of Willis, TX (Texas Lutheran University)

  • 2003 -- Nick Milosevich of Galveston, TX (University of Texas)

  • 2003 -- Katie Saalfeld of Tomball, TX (Texas A&M University)

  • 2004 -- Jordan Byers of Victoria, TX (University of Texas)
